Alexander the Great has always been of crucial interest to scholars of ancient history, classical archaeology, art and philology, and it is important that the results of recent research in the various fields should from time to time be reviewed and compared. An international conference on Alexander the Great from a Nordic point of view was thus organized by the Accademia di Danimarca in Rome during the period 27-29 January 1992. One of its aims was to provide a suitable forum at which scholars from Scandinavia could be brought together with international experts on the Macedonian king, his achievements and image. The present volume comprises the final proceedings of the conference, which was divided into four sessions, focusing respectively on the themes of Alexander in literature, Hellas and Persia, Alexander in art, and Imitatio Alexandri.
