Sangue chiama sangue

Il periodo della storia di Roma che va dal sesto consolato di Gaio Mario alla morte di Lucio Cornelio Silla (100-78 a.C.) vide la definitiva rottura del sistema costituzionale e la crisi del sistema politico in un contesto generale caratterizzato anche da guerre esterne e dalla prima guerra civile, nonché dalla dittatura di Silla, e infine dal recupero dell'egemonia politica da parte delle grandi famiglie romane. "Sangue chiama sangue" è un'introduzione alle drammatiche vicende storiche di quegli anni, che diedero inizio alla lunga, tormentata transizione dalla Repubblica all'Impero. Basato su uno studio vasto e attento delle fonti e della saggistica contemporanea, il volume pone un'enfasi sugli aspetti politici dei grandi processi ed eventi dell'epoca, ma anche sugli aspetti umani, famigliari e sociali del processo politico; e ripropone una lettura allargata di quest'ultimo, mettendo l'accento anche su personaggi "minori". Il libro è il prodotto di un autonomo progetto di ricerca svolto nel 2013 presso la University of California, Berkeley-Department Ancient History and Mediterranean Archaeology, Berkeley, California, Stati Uniti d'America.

"Sangue chiama sangue" - translation: "Blood calls for Blood" - is a book for the lay, educated public based upon a review of academic publications on the period of Roman History between the sixth consulate of Caius Marius and the death of Lucius Cornelius Sulla (100-78 BC). Those years saw the final rupture of the constitutional system (cracked over the years of the Gracchi brothers, 133-121 BC) and the crisis of polity in a general context, characterized also by exterior wars and the First Civil War, as well as by the dictatorship of Sulla and finally by the recovery of political hegemony by the great Roman families. The book is an account of that Roman world's traumatic transformation, which was the introduction to the long, dramatic transition from Republic to Empire. It serves as guide to the intricacies of Republican politics and the struggle for power, giving insights on the great commanders and other key figures, painting a portrait of the complex society in which they lived, and combining scholarship with storytelling to bring the ancient world to life. Indeed its goal is an ambitious one: present the reader with a broad and accessible tableau of the city of Rome, the Romans, the Roman State and the Roman world, with reference to the historical period considered. Besides discussion of the wars, it examines the social conflicts, political institutions, diplomacy, economy and culture of one of the darkest periods in Roman history. It is a work for students and scholars with an interest in the history and civilization of the Romans, but also for enthusiasts of the subject matter, whether they have specific knowledge or not. The book is written in Italian, with the Acknowledgments translated into English: "Sangue chiama sangue" is the product of an independent research project done in 2013 at the University of California, Berkeley (Berkeley, California, USA).
