Palladio was the first to provide a visual representation of an ancient concrete walling construction method using removable wooden formwork, which he termed maniera riempiuta, a method since used by modern and contemporary architects. The current study traces Palladio' s creative reading of Vitruvius, focusing on the afterlife of Vitruvian emplekton, since it seems to have been equated during the Renaissance with the maniera riempiuta. It also investigates the Classical literary and archaeological sources of the concrete walling methods proposed by Palladio, identifying a forgotten aspect of their enduring impact on European architecture until at least the early nineteenth century.

The Authors
Louis Cellauro studied architecture at the École d’Architecture de Lyon and history of art at the Université Lumière Lyon 2, before moving to London, where he studied at the Courtauld Institute of Art, under the supervision of Howard Burns, being awarded an MA and a PhD. He has been the recipient of many fellowships based in the USA, in Germany and at the ETH, Zurich. He was awarded an Habilitation à diriger des recherches by the Université François-Rabelais in Tours in 2006. He is currently affiliated with the Centro di Studi sulla Cultura e l’Immagine di Roma
Gilbert Richaud studied at the École d’Architecture de Lyon and at the Université Lumière Lyon 2, where he was awarded an MA and a PhD in the history of art. He is currently affiliated with the Laboratoire de recherche historique Rhône-Alpes (LARHRA), part of the Centre national de la recherche scientifique (UMR5190), based in Lyons. He taught construction history at the Université Lumière Lyon 2 on a part-time basis. Several of his articles on the history on the first modern concretes have been published as part of conference proceedings.
